Introducing the St. Carol Scholarship
While our foundation honors the legacy of Henry Deibel, our very first scholarship honors someone equally important: Carol. When Henry met Carol in the Pocono Mountains, he found his greatest partner.
Carol was intelligent, compassionate, brave, and endlessly kind. She celebrated the successes of others without ever asking for recognition herself. Throughout Henry's life as an educator, Carol quietly stood beside him, supporting every classroom he inspired and every student whose life he touched.
The St. Carol Scholarship honors those whose love and sacrifice often go unseen. Awarded to at least one recipient on a yearly basis, it is an ongoing scholarship inspired by Carol's unwavering support of Henry—but its purpose reaches far beyond one family.
This scholarship exists for students from single-caregiver homes—households where one person carries the primary responsibility of raising and supporting a young person. That caregiver may be a parent, grandparent, legal guardian, foster parent, aunt, uncle, older sibling, or another trusted adult.
Sometimes, the scholarship recipient is the one receiving that care. Other times, the recipient is also the one providing the care.
What Is a Single-Caregiver Home?
Why We're Partnering with Scholarship America
We want this scholarship to be administered professionally from day one.
Rather than building our own scholarship system, we're partnering with Scholarship America, the nation's largest scholarship administrator.
Since 1958, Scholarship America has awarded more than $6 billion to 3.5 million students, manages over 1,350 scholarship programs, and works with organizations of every size to administer scholarships fairly and transparently.
They will manage:
• Student applications
• Eligibility verification
• Independent application review
• Recipient selection
• Award distribution
• Compliance and reporting
This allows our small foundation to focus on our mission while ensuring every applicant receives a fair and professional process.
At the Henry Deibel Foundation, we intentionally use the phrase single-caregiver home because families are built in many different ways.
A single-caregiver home is one where one person carries the primary responsibility of raising and supporting a young person. That caregiver may be a parent, grandparent, legal guardian, foster parent, aunt, uncle, older sibling, or another trusted adult. What matters isn't their title—it is that one person has shouldered the primary responsibility of caring for that child.
Many students from these homes also take on responsibilities beyond what is expected of their peers. They may work, care for younger siblings, help support the household financially, or assist a parent or grandparent while continuing to pursue their education.
Sometimes, the scholarship recipient is the one receiving that care. Other times, the recipient is the one providing the care.

Total Goal: $10,500
You may notice that approximately three-quarters of our initial fundraising goal covers administrative costs rather than direct scholarship funding. That's intentional.
This campaign isn't simply funding our first scholarship—it is funding the launch of a scholarship program that we hope will serve students for generations.
As a newly established Philadelphia-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we're investing in building a scholarship program the right way from the very beginning. Rather than creating our own application system, review process, and compliance procedures, we've chosen to partner with Scholarship America, the nation's leading scholarship administrator. Their team will manage applications, verify eligibility, oversee recipient selection, distribute awards, and ensure every scholarship is administered fairly and professionally.
These are startup costs—the investment required to build the foundation for everything that comes next.
